Y da Anil Kapoor why ?

After all the furore over Anil Kapoor in MI 4, I was quite frankly disappointed when I saw his blink-and- you-miss role in the movie. Before the scene starts, the theatre audience gave a loud jeer and some people whistled too. But when Tom Cruise gives an intro to his colleague about Anil Kapoor and says “Indian billionaire, flirtatious playboy….” the audience had no choice but to give out a heavy laugh !

Anil Kapoor in an interview said that Tom Cruise wanted to be sensitive to the Indian culture while shooting but alas that was just in an interview. Within 50 seconds into Anil Kapoor’s introduction we have Anil Kapoor flaunting his collection of Kamasutra pics. Quite frankly, the book receives more hype abroad than in India, where it is taboo to talk about it. Though I agree that the flaunting goes well the image of him being a playboy, I cannot fathom how Kama Sutra is in the Indian culture.

Apart from these the movie doesn’t lack in any sense in awesomeness. The stunt sequence in the Al Burj hotel in Dubai is awesome. That might be the closest I ever get to the hotel in my life ! The climax  fighting sequence in the multi-level car park apparently in Mumbai (but not) is amazing. The idea that the villain uses Sun TV cable network to destroy the world is amusing.

As an action/thriller movie, yes MI 4 is an amazing movie. But Anil Kapoor’s role in the movie is over hyped. After Slumdog Millionaire this is definitely a step down. I mean Mallika Sherawat had a better role in the Myth than Anil Kapoor in this movie.

Y da ? Why this Kolaveri over Kolaveri ?

In a country with more than one billion residents and more than 100 million Internet users, when a song goes viral on the web in India it really gets noticed……”
This is what the TIME had to say about the latest bomb shell from the south (next to Vidya Balan of course).

Singing the song in get togethers, replying to every second question with ‘Why this Kolaveri’, every person who owns a youtube channel uploading his/her own version of Kolaveri, making it to the headlines of The Hindu (that is enough right ? ), TOI (for those who still read it) released Top 10 versions of Kolaveri ! . The list goes on…….

For the Tamil Guy watching this silently from the stands all I can say is WTF ! (no not WTK !)

Heart-break Tanglish songs with a folk tunes are not new down south. I mean Deva has done that throughout his career.I must agree this song is a notch above them but this cult status that it is currently achieving is outright obnoxious.

I think there is a difference in the way people perceive the song. I am sure the Tamil people (Dhanush himself) are amused why the hell non-Tamils like this song. For us it is just another song with a strong nadaswaram base. Because we know that it is a Tamil song our expectations and perception is different even though it is sung with English overtones. For others, it is primarily an English song, sung in local beats and ofcourse the meaningless lyrics.

People think that ‘Ooohh the lyrics are so simple, the tune is so catchy…..let us also sing it”. What they don’t realize is that Dhanush sings it in a studio ! He has obviously enhanced and mixed the audio before releasing it. Thats why it is pleasant to hear. Not in your voice ! Last week in some random party at our office few people started singing it totally out of the blue. The song’s lyrics which mean “Why this killer rage ?” was all I could say to people who were singing it. To avoid the embarrassment, some people just left the scene of murder.

I don’t think any song has ever done this much damage to a phrase so much so that the people of the language refrain from using it fearing pettiness and people who dont speak the language use it in every other sentence. “Why this Kolaveri ?” is a very popular colloquial phrase used in daily life of teenagers ever since Anna started his campaign (for dravidars not for Lokpal). Now it just seems a rip-off of a viral song whereas it is actually the other way around.

I am all up for admiring WTK as a song for its simplicity. For promoting it to the status of a cult icon, it is not a Sadda Haq da !
